MLK Day Celebrations

This year's events include one for children at Central Queens Y, Harry Belafonte at BAM and a march on City Hall.

Today, the residents of the five boroughs will have the opportunity to reflect upon the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. at several events taking place across the city.

The Central Queens Y will host an MLK Day Mini-camp from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The day camp will cost $55 for members and $60 for non-members.

The event is aimed at children in kindergarten through fifth grade.

The Brooklyn Academy of Music, located at 30 Lafayette Ave., is presenting an MLK Day event that will include performances by Brooklyn Interdenominational Choir and Kindred the Family Soul.

The celebration, which is kicks off at 10:30 a.m., will also include a keynote address by Harry Belafonte and a live simulcast of Barack Obama’s second presidential inauguration.

The event is free and is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Seating begins at 8 a.m.

One Million Moms for Gun Control will march today.

The walk is inspired by King’s message of nonviolence. Attendees are encouraged to bring signs.

Those interested in taking part in the march should meet at 9:15 am. At Cadman Plaza Park in Brooklyn. At 9:25 a.m., Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will speak.

Then, the marchers will walk over the Brooklyn Bridge and end up with a rally at City Hall Park.

All schools and city offices will be closed Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Alternate side parking is also suspended.
