Week In Review

Despite national tragedy, this week mostly represented a return to normal life for many area residents

Nationally, it was a week that ended in tragedy, with six people killed and a popular Congresswoman critically wounded by an apparent lone gunman in a suburban Tuscon parking lot. 

Closer to home, it was much quieter, with the gears of community activity — zoning meetings, trash pickup and basketball games — creaking to a start after being frozen in place by last month's blizzard.

Here are some of the highlights of the last week in Little Neck:

Monday

Councilman Dan Halloran, D-Whitestone, that he won't divulge names of whistleblowers at the city Department of Sanitation. According to Halloran, several workers came forward charging that Sanitation supervisors intentionally held back cleanup efforts in the wake of last month's blizzard.

Tuesday

Even as classrooms found to have mold last month opened Monday, health concerns held by at least two P.S. 67 parents .

Wednesday

We received reports of a large mix of plowed snow, trash and recycling blocking the southbound lane of Little Neck Parkway and 39th Road. Sanitation ended up clearing the pile on Friday,  last month's blizzard hit.

Thursday

Former area Assembly candidate Steve Behar pens about Gov. Andrew Cuomo's first speech as New York's chief executive.

Friday

The problems for P.S. 67 continued with reports of a between school officials and parents on the recent mold discovery. Soon after publishing our story, the confusion between school staff and parents became more clear due to the revelation that at least one leading P.S. 67 employee did not know about the mold until Jan. 3 — nine days after the spore-producing fungus was found.

Saturday

A six-day suspension sidelining much of its starting lineup led to a dispiriting for the Bayside Commodores, losing in a lopsided contest, 66-36, to Eagle Academy.
