Last Chance: Deck and Porch Inspections

The deadline is approaching for a free inspection without penalties from the DOB.

Time always seems to be running out, doesn't it? There's no need to worry. Just drop by Patch for weekly reminders of important looming dates and deadlines.

Here’s an important one to keep in mind this week:

Deck and Porch Inspections

The city’s Department of Buildings will inspect decks and porches for safety and not issue violations if dangerous conditions are found until Aug. 1.

If repairs are necessary and conditions do not pose an immediate safety hazard, the city will allow property owners time to correct any conditions on their homes without issuing penalties.

Homeowners can request a free inspection to ensure that they are structurally safe and in compliance with city regulations.

The DOB will search for cracking, rotting, failed connections and other conditions that could potentially be dangerous.

The No-Penalty Deck and Porch Inspection program was first launched in 2010. For more information, visit the agency's website.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
