Jan. 29-30: Days Of Rest

Putting the 'end' back in weekend

Ah the weekend. For most of us, it's that period of time during which we get stuff done, shuttling between the grocery store, the mall or perhaps a much-belated road trip to see the parents.

But here's what the weekend really means, courtesy of Dictionary.com:

[week-end] (noun): Any two-day period taken or given regularly as a weekly rest period from one's work.

Note the use of the word "rest," everybody. So lets try to insert that concept into some of these 5 Things You Need To Know, Weekend Edition:

1. Don't move that car (O.K., move it if you're blocking someone in the driveway... but you get the idea). Alternate side rules are suspended today. Meters are free.

2. Head out. Alley Pond Environmental Center is featuring its own version of a "snow day," with geared towards youngsters age 3-4. And apparently the event was planned before last month's blizzard and subsequent string of storms since it reads, "Even if there is no snow outside, we will have our own pretend snow inside." Ha!

3. Stay in. O.K., I admit it: I'm addicted to awards shows. And with the Golden Globes just past and the Oscars not far off, I'm never too far away from my fix. So bring out a bowl of popcorn and saddle up for the Screen Actors Guild awards on TNT Sunday at 8 p.m. If funny is more your thing, The Social Network's Jesse Eisenberg is hosting this week's SNL.

4. Time warp. Recently featured on the award-winning PBS special "My Generation - The '60s," legendary performers Ron Dante, Sonny Geraci and Dennis Trufano  with their Top 40 rock & roll hits tonight at Queensborough Community College. Fans of all ages perhaps know Dante best as the voice of The Archies #1 hit, "Sugar, Sugar."
