Irene Downgraded to Tropical Storm

What was once classified as a potentially Category 3 hurricane has been downgraded to a tropical storm.

Hurricane Irene became Tropical Storm Irene as she made landfall over Coney Island early Sunday morning.

Irene's renaming by no means diminishes her destructive powers, having already knocked out the power of and caused widespread flooding in streets all over the city.

In order to maintain hurricane status, winds must be blowing at no less than 74 mph, according to the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Irene arrived in New York with winds topping out at 65 mph.

Irene was originally classified as a Category 3 hurricane, but was quickly downgraded as she passed through the Bahamas and made her way to the North Carolina coast.
