Mosquito Spray Is Being Dropped Over Alley Pond Park

The DOH will spray the area until 7p.m. Wednesday night.

The Department of Health will be giving the area a good dousing of larvicide to combat the spread of West Nile-carrying mosquitoes.

The DOH warned on their Web site that Alley Pond Park, Linden Hill/College Point, Edgemerea and Somerville were sprayed on Monday, and continued to be sprayed by helicopter on Tuesday and Wednesday between the hours of 6a.m. and 7p.m.

The DOH said the larvicide poses no health threat to humans. Nevertheless, residents are urged to take the following precautions:

  • Keep indoors during spraying. Especially if you have asthma or other respiratory conditions.
  • If you want to keep your air conditioner on, set the vent to its closed position, or select its re-circulate function.
  • Remove outdoor doors and furniture, or wipe them down with soapy water before use after spraying.
  • Wash your skin and clothing if its exposed to pesticides with soap.
  • Always wash produce with water before ingesting or cooking.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
