Hard80 Blows the Roof Off The Attic

Classic rock cover band takes Douglaston by storm.

For years, the well of local live entertainment had run dry.

But thanks to The in Douglaston, that's all a thing of the past.

"Every Friday and Saturday night, The Attic hosts live rock bands. Then, on Sunday afternoon from p.m. to 7 p.m., we feature an unplugged acoustic ensemble in the garden," said Katey Gelfand, of the Attic.

With a busy calendar of events it seems the days of schlepping into the city to catch a live act could be long gone.

"We get a really nice crowd here. Everyone’s very chill, and the music is really great," Gelfand said.

Stavros Theoharis, of Rock Free Open Mic, currently handles all of the Lounge's booking.

"Stav does a really great job vetting performers and, so far, the Rock Free Open Mic series that The Attic has been hosting, as well as the other live shows he's booked for us, have turned out to be a big hit with our patrons," Gelfand said.

Friday night's performance by Hard80, a local cover band, proved her point succinctly as local residents rocked out to renditions of Kiss's "Love Gun" and Motley Crue's "Wild Side."

"The past few weeks, this place has seen some really great performers take the stage. Bands that you watch perform and think to yourself, ‘I can see myself saying I knew them when...,'" said Attic regular Larissa Peter.

Peter said the live shows are a big draw, but she also enjoys the bar's atmosphere.

"It's a really laid back scene," she said.

Recent performances at the bar have included The George and Kate Show and The Rock Free Circuit Band Showcase.

Gelfand said the shows have drawn large numbers of local residents.

"We want the community to know we're here for them and want them to think of The Attic as their own," she said.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
