Great Escape: Women of Bayside
The exhibit, which opened last May, contains photos and artifacts of notable women from yesterday and today.
Craving an afternoon at a museum, but the Met and MOMA are too far away? Right under your nose is the , founded in 1964 to help keep the history of this community alive.
Located in the Officers’ Club at Park, the Bayside Historical Society hosts a variety of events, exhibitions, programs and lectures, which range in price from free (if you’re a member) to $5.
Currently on view at the Castle (as they call it) is an exhibition called "Women of Bayside," a tribute to community members who have made a significant impact on the area through business, volunteerism and other achievements.

The exhibit, which opened last May, contains photos and artifacts of notable women from yesterday and today. Among the women profiled are Virginia Dent, an environmental activist who co-founded the Udalls Cove Preservation Committee, Track and Field sprinter and frequent Olympics competitor Aeriwentha “Mae” Faggs Starr, and Academy Award nominee May Robson, whose screen and stage credits included "Bringing Up Baby" and the original 1937 "A Star is Born."
Other photos in the exhibit showcase the Bayside that once was. Bayside Beautification Committee members plant flowers on Bell Blvd. in 1963. Keys to a new car are presented to the women of the Bayside Welcome Wagon in 1950. An American Legion Band poses with their instruments in 1938.

The Castle is open to the public Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. As the Bayside Historical Society’s expenses are funded by public, private and corporate contributions, a $3 donation per person is suggested upon admission. Parking is available in the Little Bay Park parking lot outside the entrance to Fort Totten.
