Why Go: For one, the happy hour specials are appealing, to say the least. Secondly, if you decide to stay later, you'll catch the live musical entertainment. And third, this is the perfect way to celebrate one of the last nights of the year out, leaving you the opportunity to celebrate New Year's at home.

2. Celebrate New Year's 2012

Where/When: . On Saturday, starting at 9 p.m.

Why Go: This New Year's Day celebration starts with a four-course dinner and is followed by an open bar until midnight, music via DJ and a champagne toast.

Pricing: Dinner is priced at $175 per couple, while the open bar option is $65 for each person.

Where/When: . On Saturday from 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Why Go: This New Year's celebration features a DJ, premium open bar, live simulcast from Times Square and all that you'll need for that special midnight toast.

4. Celebrate New Year's at Uncle Jack's

Where/When: . On Saturday at 6 p.m., 8 p.m., or 10 p.m.

Why Go: All those dining after 10 p.m. will get complimentary champagne for a New Year's toast. All those dining before that will relish in the exquisite menu.

5. Sunday Brunch

Where/When: . On Sunday.

Why Go: Because this is truly the way to welcome the first day of the new year - after you wake up, that is. Breakfast is served all day, so arrive at your leisure.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
