Gas Leak Repair Lags Behind Schedule

No end in sight for residents weary of weeks of repair work

Work continued this afternoon on repairs to a gas leak on Brookside Street between 34th and 37th avenues in Little Neck — with an end to the jackhammering nowhere in sight for residents in this normally tranquil enclave.

According to a sign posted at the site, work commenced on Jan. 3 with a scheduled finish date of Feb. 3. More than two weeks later, a road crew working for Con Edison was still busy digging a new trench into the pavement.

A Con Ed worker said the occupants of a passing utility truck noticed the smell from a minor gas leak a few weeks ago. It was unclear whether or not the gas leak was caused by the repair work or vice versa.
