Former Mayor Koch Endorses Meng in NY-6

After sending message with GOP nod last year, Koch comes home to Dems.

Assemblywoman Grace Meng picked up an endorsement this week that, until recently, Democrats in the five boroughs had taken for granted.

Former Mayor Ed Koch threw his weight behind Meng, D-Flushing, in her bid for the new Sixth Congressional District.

Koch, who in addition to his role as a former mayor is also a good-government lobbyist, said he was pleased to endorse the Flushing legislator.

"Above all else, Grace is a woman of principle who takes a sensible approach to her stances on the issues, including her dedication to protecting working, middle-class families and ensuring that the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share," Koch said. "That is why she has my strongest support in her bid to become our next representative from New York’s 6th Congressional district.”

Koch also said he believed the Assemblywoman would be an unflagging ally of Israel, an issue

Meng is running against City Councilman Dan Halloran, R-Whitestone, for a seat that will replace the one currently occupied by U.S. Rep. Bob Turner, R-Forest Hills.

Turner, a Republican, got Koch's endorsement in 2011 because the former New York City Mayor wanted to about the importance of standing behind Israel.

“All New Yorkers would agree that Mayor Koch is authentic, he’s the real thing,” Meng said. “The depth and seriousness of his public service experiences and accomplishments are unique among those who serve. I’m thrilled to have his support.”

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
