Five Things: What To Do in An Earthquake

August 24, 2011

We're breaking with our regularly formatted Five Things—for today only—for safety's sake. Yes, it was perversely thrilling to 'survive', but it is a serious matter. Aftershocks could come, and we want you to be prepared. We are getting our information from FEMA.

1. If you are in bed, stay in bed, unless you're near a light fixture that can fall on you. Cover your head with a pillow.

2. If you are outside, stay outside. Keep away from buildings, street lights and wiring.

3. Use a doorway for shelter only if it's nearby, and sturdy.

4. Otherwise crouch down under a desk, table or in the corner of the room. Stay away from glass, or objects that could crash down on you.
