Tranquility reigns in northeast Queens, even as monumental events shake other parts of the country and the world

Good morning, Little Neck. Though all may seem quiet on the northeastern Queens front this chilly a.m., in the rest of the world, upheaval — whether caused by man or by mother nature  — has occurred in the last 24 hours.

In Libya, leader Muannmar Gaddafi appeared briefly on state TV holding this umbrella against a rain of chaos that has gripped his North African nation in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, in New Zealand, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake toppled office buildings, homes and schools in the southern island city of Christchurch.

Closer to home, in Madison, Wis., union supporters held one of the largest rallies to date against legislation they say will strip the power of municipal unions to negotiate.

1. It's official: Queens will not get federal disaster reimbursement from last December's blizzard. The borough of airports was shut out, along with Brooklyn, Manhattan and The Bronx from the plan, announced Friday, which will cover Staten Island only.

2. Five months after filing for bankruptcy, beleaguered one-time giant Blockbuster announced it would be putting itself up for sale for $290 million — a far cry from its $1.47 billion debt load at the time of its September Chapter 11 filing. Blockbuster operates stores in New Hyde Park and Bayside, among others.
