Douglaston: Week In Review

It was a busy week in Douglaston.

The federal government decided to pay Queens back for snow removal efforts during December's massive blizzard.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg dropped by the community to announce a new measure that he said would save residents money on their water bills.

And Douglaston Patch provided an update on a proposal to create a green market near the neighborhood's Long Island Rail Road station.

Monday
Mayor Bloomberg stops by the Douglaston Pump Station to announce a new citywide water leak notification program that he said will alert customers if a pipe is broken underneath their homes or their water use has spiked.

Tuesday
Community Board 11 Chairman Jerry Iannece is re-elected at the group's monthly meeting. Residents of Bayside Hills turn out in droves to CB 11 to blast a variance request and board members discuss Fiscal Year 2011 budget priorities.

Wednesday
This week's content for moms and dads from the community included a Great Escape column on the National Art League and advice from our Parent Council on how to prevent kids from spending all their free time on their gadgets.

Thursday
U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., announces that Queens will be repaid by the federal government for snow removal costs accrued during  the blizzard that swept the five boroughs late last year.

Friday
A nonprofit that operates city green markets stops by Douglaston to view a site at which a new market has been proposed.

Weekend
Alley Pond Environmental Center announces that it will give away free trees later this month as well as host a celebration for a long-time bird rehabilitator.
