Douglaston Library Offers Full Slate for Winter

Northern Boulevard Branch Plans Art Gallery Show, Spring Festival

As winter settles in with its holiday madness, your Queens Library has resources to keep your family happy and thriving.

We will be presenting programs, from story times for the youngest library-lovers, to homework help, crafts, after school chess and so much more, all the way up to science fair and eighth-grade exit projects.

There is so much for adults, too. What's better in nasty weather than to curl up with the latest novel or an old movie on DVD?

Use the library's computers to jump-start your holiday shopping. Plan a vacation getaway -  real or imaginary. Improve English conversation skills or learn a new language. Find a new recipe for cookies or casseroles. Update your Facebook page. Do the research to get your fantasy baseball roster ready for spring training. It's all free with your library card, so you can afford to indulge.

The most up-to-date information on library programs and events can be found on the library's website.

Please come introduce yourself to Ron Wan, our new Community Library Manager in Douglaston/Little Neck. Most recently, he was adult services manager at the Flushing Library, with many years of library experience in Brooklyn before that.

Ron is excited to be back in a library with more of a small town feel after the hustle and bustle of Flushing.

"I want to continue to build responsive and excellent library collections and do outreach to various community organizations, schools, senior centers, everyone in the neighborhood, so we have the best educational and recreational resources," he said.

Ron, a Queens resident, is fluent in Mandarin as well as English.

One of the best ways to spend your time with us is to join the Friends of the Library at Douglaston/Little Neck. The group meets every second Thursday of the month to plan exciting programs and fundraisers to benefit our community library.

Last March, the Friends sponsored its first annual Spring Festival during which people of all ages came together to celebrate with stories, crafts, treats, balloons and flower planting.  A new children's rug was given to the library for the meeting room to much appreciation. It is now used for our children's program, Story Time.

The library's next big project will be a rotational art gallery to which local artists can submit their works to be showcased every few months. Artists of all ages will give talks, seminars and workshops in the community.

There are too many great projects to list, so please contact Friends President Leiman Johnson or V.P. Janel Doddo at 718- 990-5187 or the library at 718-225-8414 for more information.
