DOH to Spray for West Nile Virus at Alley Pond Park

The city will drop larvicide at several northeast Queens sites this week.

The city's Department of Health will drop larvicide at a number of northeast Queens sites during the next five days to combat the spread of West Nile Virus-carrying mosquitoes.

The agency warned on its website that Alley Pond Park, Linden Hill/College Point, Edgemerea and Somerville would be sprayed by helicopter on Monday through Friday.

The spraying would be carried out between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.

The DOT said larvicide poses no health threat to humans, but recommended that persons with asthma or other respiratory conditions stay inside during the spraying.

Also, residents should remove outdoor furniture or wipe them down with soapy water before using them after the spraying culminates. Those who plan to keep their air conditioners on should set the vent to its closed position or select the re-circulate function.
