Dec. 22: Girls Rock

To celebrate the UConn Lady Huskies' history-making string of wins, we have not one, but two, women's basketball stories coming your way

It's been more than 38 years since Congress passed Title IX, which provided equal access to activities — including sports — for all students enrolled in publicly-funded institutions, regardless of sex or ethnicity.

And with last night's record-setting string of wins by the University of Connecticut women's basketball team, along with Tuesday's clinic held by the Monroe College Lady Mustangs and a win last night by our own Bayside High Lady Commodores, it might just be time to declare the legislation a rip-roaring success.

Last night, the Huskies broke a decades-old achievement held by a legendary University of California-Los Angeles men's basketball program by beating the Florida State Seminoles, 93-62, for their 89th consecutive win.

And not to be outdone, the Bayside girls squad on Tuesday night beat Martin Van Buren, 56-36, in a contest led by Lady Commodore Ashley Mitchell, who scored 16 points.

So coming from an editor much, much more comfortable hanging out on the sidelines, I say, "Good work, ladies." Now on to other stories, events and announcements for your Wednesday:
