Day Tripper: Sunset Park

Take a walking tour at the Green-Wood Cemetery and stroll along Brooklyn Chinatown's 8th Avenue.

Between keeping within your budget and scheduling time off from work, planning a vacation can be stressful.

If you find you have too little time to travel and not enough money in your bank account, there’s no need to fret.

Each Thursday, Douglaston Patch will profile one of the five boroughs’ unique neighborhoods, where you can sample some local culture and culinary delights.

10 a.m.

Start your morning with a walk in the neighborhood’s namesake, a 24.5-acre park that is the second highest point in Brooklyn and known as one of the best views of the city’s skyline.

Or, begin your day with a stroll through Brooklyn Chinatown, which is located at 8th Avenue from 42nd Street to 68th Street. The strip includes restaurants, bakeries, the Hong Kong Supermarket and Buddhist temples.

Noon

For lunch, grab a bite at Ba Xuyen, a popular Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwich shop and restaurant.

The eatery, located at 4222 8th Ave., is known for its pork and pickle baguettes, but also serves Banh Mi with meatballs, grilled pork or pate with cold cuts.

1 p.m.

Drop by the famous Green-Wood Cemetery for a walking tour or Halloween-themed event.

This Saturday and Sunday, the cemetery is opening its mausoleums to the public from noon to 4 p.m. as part of Open House New York weekend.

Attendees will be able to view the Catacombs and family mausoleums of piano maker Henry Englehard Steinway, Coney Island hot dog king Charles Feltman and Stephen Whitney, one of the 19th Century’s wealthiest men.

The free event will include maps of the grounds and “hop on, hop off” service on the cemetery’s trolley. To make a reservation, visit Green-Wood’s website.

On Oct. 30, the cemetery will host a Halloween tour at 1 p.m. during which historian Jeff Richman will take visitors to the graves of The Wizard of Oz, George Washington’s dentist, the founders of Spiritualism and other sites.

The event, which will also include a tour of the Catacombs, costs $10 for members and $20 for nonmembers.

The cemetery is located at 500 25th St.

5 p.m.

For dinner, stop by El Bohio Restaurant #3 to sample Puerto Rican, Mexican and Dominican cuisine.

The eatery offers a variety of sandwiches, including roast pork, grilled chicken, ham and cheese and steak, as well as omelettes, soups, Mofongobohio (mashed green plantains), chicken dishes, oxtail and beef stew, grilled pork chops, steaks, seafood, tortas, tacos, burritos, quesadillas and combination platters.
