Day Tripper: Downtown Brooklyn

Catch a movie at Fort Greene's BAM Cinematek, shop at the Fulton Street Mall and grab a bite at Junior's and Morton's Steakhouse.

Between keeping within your budget and scheduling time off from work, planning a vacation can be stressful.

If you find you have too little time to travel and not enough money in your bank account, there’s no need to fret.

Each Thursday, Douglaston Patch will profile one of the five boroughs’ unique neighborhoods, where you can sample some local culture and culinary delights.

Stop by Junior’s for a bite of lunch and a tasty dessert. The eatery, which is known for its cheesecake, has been a staple in Brooklyn for more than 60 years.

The restaurant’s menu includes huge deli sandwiches, fish, ribs, chicken dishes and 10-ounce steak burgers. 

But visitors can also choose from a variety of salads, breakfast foods, barbecue dishes, soups, appetizers, desserts, ice cream sodas and pastas.

Junior’s, located at 386 Flatbush Ave., is open from 6:30 a.m. until midnight on Sundays through Thursdays and until 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

2 p.m.

Stop by the Fulton Street Mall for an afternoon of shopping. The center houses more than 100 stores that sell children’s clothes shops, beauty supplies, health and fitness products, men’s and women’s clothing, home and garden items, jewelry, electronics and shoes.

Food options include Zams Euro Deli, Thai Cheong Salad, Tony’s Pizza and several fast food chains.

5 p.m.

Dine at Morton’s Steakhouse, which has been a popular Downtown Brooklyn eatery for more than 30 years.

Morton’s menu includes double-cut filet mignon, porterhouse steaks, New York strip steak, Chicago-style bone-in-ribeye and prime rib.

Other entrees offered are Chilean sea bass, lamb chops, Chicken Christopher, crab cakes, lobster tail and salmon fillet. Succulent side dishes include Idaho potato, Lyonnaise potatoes, onion rings, spinach and mushrooms and grilled jumbo asparagus.

For dessert, try the key lime pie, Crème Brulee, carrot cake or Morton’s Legendary Sundae.

7 p.m.

Stop by the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), the nation’s oldest performing arts center, and catch a movie.

Two of the summer’s most highly acclaimed art house films – “The Tree of Life” and “Midnight in Paris” are currently showing at BAM Cinematek.

Other screenings include “Beats, Rhymes and Life,” a documentary on landmark hip hop trio A Tribe Called Quest, and “Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle,” one of New Wave auteur Eric Rohmer’s mid-1980s films.

Next weekend, BAM is offering an Animation Block Party, which includes a series of short films from around the world for children. The program, which is being held on July 30 and 31, begins at noon.

If you visit BAM this evening, you can catch the live Metropolitan Opera HD performance of “The Bolshoi Ballet: Don Quixote.”

Upcoming live performances include the Urban Guerilla Orchestra and Jose James.
