Center for Women of NY to Host Job Fair and Conference on Oct. 26

Event will include speakers, workshops and a fashion show.

The Center for the Women of New York will host its annual World of Working Women’s Conference on Oct. 26 at Flushing’s Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel.

The event, which will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., will include a job fair, workshops, a fashion show and a panel of speakers, including CWNY President Barbara Scheiner, former state Assemblywoman Ann-Margaret Carrozza and Douglaston’s Ann Jawin, who founded the Center for the Women of New York.

"It’s a wonderful opportunity for women – and also, we don’t turn men away – to learn about the current conditions in the job market," Jawin said. "We also have workshops that focus on the particular problems that people face during interviews."

“Where Are the Jobs and How Do We Get Them?” is a free event, but those interested in taking part should register early and bring copies of their resume.

“It is shocking to note that in 1970, the comparison between equally equipped women and men was 66 cents to one dollar,” the Center wrote in a release on the event. “Now, 40 years later, with all the advances that women were supposed to have made, it is 2012 and the amount is only 77 cents to one dollar that men earn.”

A variety of companies and organizations will set up tables during the event to answer questions from attendees. Interviewing techniques and methods of improving a resume will be discussed.

The fashion show that culminates the event will involve an expert talking about how to “dress for success.”
