Braunstein Hosts Holiday Gift Drives

Assemblyman's office is collecting toys for children and clothing for veterans.

State Assemblyman Edward Braunstein, D-Bayside, said his office is hosting holiday gift drives for children and veterans that his predecessor, former Assemblywoman Ann-Margaret Carrozza, founded more than 15 years ago.

The assemblyman’s office will collect sugar-free candy, pajamas, slippers, robes, sweaters, socks, toiletries, puzzles and playing cards for veterans as well as toys for children.

All items must be donated by Dec. 19.

“I am conducting a toy drive to help families in Queens who may be struggling due to the poor economy,” Braunstein said.

All donations for veterans will be distributed to the St. Albans Community Living Center of the Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Healthcare System.

“These donations help show our nation’s veterans how much we appreciate the sacrifices they made for us,” the assemblyman said.

Carrozza first held the gift drives in 1996. They have been operated in northeast Queens every year since.

Gifts can be dropped at Braunstein’s office, located at 213-33 39th Ave., Suite 238 in Bayside, or Carrozza’s law office at 213-38 40th Ave.

Participants can also leave gifts at Robert Mittman’s Allergy and Asthma Family Care Center, located at 38-21 Bell Blvd.

For more information on the gift drives, call Braunstein’s office at 718-357-3588.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
