A Bayside man was one of two Queens residents killed in a Saturday plane crash in Long Island, Newsday reported.
Bayside’s Andrew Messana, 72, and Fresh Meadows’s Cyril McLavin, 51, died after a plane they were piloting crashed just after 3 p.m. on the Moriches Inlet in Long Island, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
It was unclear who was flying at the time it crashed, but the plane belonged to McLavin, Newsday reported.
The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate what caused the single-engine plane to crash.
The plane sank to the bottom of the inlet, which is about a quarter mile from land, Newsday reported. The U.S. Coast Guard was able to remove the aircraft from under 30 feet of water on Saturday night.
The plane had departed from Spadaro Airport in Long Island.
