Bayside Church to Host Dance Fundraiser for Sandy Victims

All Saints Church will collect food, clothing and other items at event on Saturday.

Bayside’s All Saints Church will host a dance this weekend in an effort to raise money for local victims of Hurricane Sandy.

The dance will take place from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the church, which is located at 214th Place and 40th Avenue.

Father Laurence Byrne said the event is free, but attendees should bring a donation.

“We want to take care of people, but have a good time doing it,” he said. “Maybe it will give people without power and heat a chance to get out of their dark homes for a while.”

Donations can include money, cleaning supplies, batteries, toys, coats and clothes.

Byrne said nonperishable food items are also encouraged.

“We’re looking for items that can be easily cooked,” he said. “A lot of people are diminished in terms of what they can cook.”

The donated items will primarily be given to residents in Queens, especially the Rockaways.

The dance will include refreshments. For more information, call 718-229-5631.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
