Aug. 10: Five Things You Need to Know Today

A handful of information to kick-start your morning.

1. The Alley Pond Environmental Center may seem like a longtime fixture in the local environmental conservancy scene, but in reality, it's only been around for the past 35 years. Find out what the area was in its previous life - and how it's been transformed - in this week's Remembered Places.

2. Poetry is everywhere, but it has an especially potent presence in the Starbucks in Little Neck Plaza on the second Monday of each month, when members of the Performance Poets Association gather to read their work. This month, meet Jamie White, a poet from Manhasset, and check out a sample of his writing here

3. Come back later today for this week's cycling column, in which we visit the nearby-but-still-very-scenic Fort Totten Park.

4. New Yorkers still lamenting the loss of Elaine's, the famous Manhattan eatery that closed in May, now have the option of reliving at least part of the experience from the comfort of their own homes. The New York Times reports that staple Elaine's artifacts -- including copper pots from the kitchen, original Warhol pieces and "Table No. 1" will be up for auction on Sept. 20.

5. After a nice pummeling of rain on Tuesday, we can expect some sun in the early part of the day before it's predicted to start pouring again in the evening.
