April 14: Co-op Tax Revolt

Issues over skyrocketing property taxes take center stage at shareholder meeting in Little Neck tonight

Update, 4:28 p.m.: Sen. Tony Avella, D-Bayside, said he would not be able to attend tonight's co-op shareholder meeting on city tax assessments at P.S. 811Q, but that he would be sending a representative. 

Avella recently signed on to two bills introduced by Sen. Toby Stavisky, D-Flushing, currently in a state Senate committee, which would put co-ops and condo buildings in the same property tax class as one- and two-family homes.

No word yet on whether any other area elected officials would be in attendance tonight.

Residents of Deepdale Gardens and Beech Hills Apartments will gather to voice criticism over double- and, in some cases,  for city cooperative and condo buildings.

According to Glen Oaks Village Association president Bob Friedrich, elected officials will be present at tonight's event. However, city Department of Finance commissioner David Frankel is not expected to attend.

1. An advisory panel voted unanimously to recommend granting  a waiver to run the city's school system. State commissioner David Steiner still needs to approve the measure, however. 

2. Waiver or no waiver, Walcott will visit Francis Lewis High School this morning at 7:45 a.m. as the newly-appointed schools chancellor makes the rounds across the five boroughs.  

3. Diners visiting Applebee's restaurants in Queens tonight will get 10 percent of their bill donated to Queens Library. Just present this flyer to your server. 

4. Two great things finally get together at Marathon Jewish Center's  tonight at 7:15 p.m. Yum. 

5. Alternate side parking rules are in effect today.
