APEC to Host Penny Social Fundraiser on July 22

Attendees will be able to purchase tickets and win baskets of a variety of donated items.

Northeast Queens residents will be able to win everything from perfumes to wine and cheese at a low price during ’s upcoming Tricky Tray Penny Social Fundraiser.

The center, located at 228-06 Northern Blvd. in Douglaston, has been hosting the fundraiser for at least 10 years, APEC’s Executive Director Irene Scheid said.

“It’s not one of our major fundraisers, but it’s a fun one,” she said. “We give away items that were donated to the center.”

Money raised during the July 22 event goes back into APEC’s wildlife programs, such as a live animal program at 2 p.m. on July 21 that will include snakes, frogs, insects and an alligator.

Scheid said the center takes the items donated for the Tricky Tray fundraiser and creates baskets filled with items =, including perfume, sewing items, wine and cheese.

A total 200 items are placed on a table with a numbered cup in front of them during the event.

Attendees will buy a sheet of tickets and place a ticket in the cup of an item in which they are interested. Then, the numbers are picked out of the cups and prizes are given away.

The cost to attend the event is $12, which includes one sheet of tickets. Then, participants will be able to purchase additional sheets of 20 tickets for a few dollars.

The event will also include light refreshments, such as coffee, tea and cake.

To RSVP, call 718-229-4000. But attendees can also just show up at the door on the day of the event, which will run from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
