APEC to Host Creative Writing Workshop on Nov. 5

Participants will write about their appreciation of nature during first of environmental center's writing classes.

Alley Pond Environmental Center will offer a creative writing class on Nov. 5 that will give participants the opportunity to write about their love of nature.

Laurie Nicholson, a professor of writing at Hunter College who also owns a children’s clothing store in Astoria, will lead the workshop, which will be open for writers of all levels.

Participants will be able to express their appreciation of nature through writing in the class, said Karen Pierro, APEC’s spokeswoman.

“APEC is looking to increase our adult programs, so we thought we’d go with a nature-inspired creative writing workshop,” Pierro said. “This is geared for writers at all levels to be able to express their love of nature. But the concept can be used for any genre of writing.”

The center, which is located at 228-06 Northern Blvd. in Douglaston, will host additional creative writing workshops on various topics in the first half of 2013 if the November class is a success.

Pre-registration is required. Those interested in participating should call 718-229-4000.

The class will run from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. APEC members will pay $12, while the fee for non-members is $18.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
