An article in Business Week just revealed that legal settlements for New York Police Department (NYPD) misconduct cost the city $119 million in the fiscal year ended June 30, 2011.
That's about $14.88 per person for each and every one of the City's 8 million residents.
If the average teacher costs $80,000 a year in salary and benefits, which is a guess on my part, the cost of NYPD misconduct cost the city the equivalent of 1,487 teachers.
From 2006 to 2010, claim payouts for NYPD misconduct went up 46%.
Thius is further evidence that the NYPD is out of control. It's time for the Justice Department to investigate NYPD conduct and take steps to reign it in.
