Gallery Walk Bayside High School Student Art Exhibition

Congratulations to the winners of the Bayside High School (BHS) Gallery Walk Art Show! 1st Place: Christine Palomino 2nd Place: Christopher Duncan 3rd Place: Somyee Ho These art students participated in the Bayside Village BID Art Fair but with a different approach. They held a Gallery Walk where the students displayed their art at different businesses along Bell Blvd. The BBA hosted the first location where the judges met to get briefed on the 'Rubric' which outlined the award criteria. The judges, Beata Szpura, Liz DiGiorgio, and Pat Hammerman, all artists themselves set out to all 7 locations of the "Gallery Walk". For the next 3 hours, they visited each artist at businesses to hear their thought about the creations displayed. The judging was intense as it came down to very fine details to come up with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. While at the BBA, I had the pleasure to chat with the community as they viewed the artwork from "Bayside Creative", the schools digital art design business composed of the students and led by Cheryl Steinberg, art director. Some shared how they had not previously visited some of the businesses but had the opportunity to sample one of Maggie Moo's great ice cream while viewing Christopher Duncan's work, or Il Vesuvio's Italian food where Ni Jia Cui's creations were savored. At one end Bagles & Bake's great bagels were nosh'ed by many and viewed Patricia Chang's work. The opposite end J & J Barber shop displayed Naeem Barrett's work while some viewers got their first haircut there. I heard one viewer note their first visit to the "Turn The Page Bookstore" was an awakening with the books available while Somyee Ho's creations were displayed. Citibank's large space provided a great display of Christina Palomino's works of art. This unique art experience was free and provided an up close and personal touch with the artists and their work. Previously, Bayside High School held an art show in the school but partnering with the BID and BBA provided a combined opportunity for the community to view the art work while visiting businesses and shopping on the most beautiful day this year!
