District 26 Presidents Council - Parent Leaders in ACTION!

Our District 26 PTA Presidents Council held its annual Legislative Breakfast at the Bayside Diner Friday. Each year, it is more and more impressive with the work put in to prepare. Those unfamiliar with the function of the breakfast, it  is to bring together our parent leaders and our elected officials to address issues impacting our students and K-8 schools here in the BEST school district in NYC! (That is a fact.) To appreciate all that went into this function, you had to listen and look at the topics presented to our representative. I'd first like to acknowledge our Presidents Council Leadership Team: President - Kim D'Angelo, Treasurer - Alim Gafar, and our Recording Secretaries - Erica Lobosco & Linda Lovett. They spent many hours preparing this agenda and the content so that we could provide input and work towards improving our schools and children's public education. The issues presented were:
Department of Education and Parent Involvement

  • Safety in Our Schools
  • High Stakes Testing and the Use of Testing Data
  • Common Core Learning Standards
  • inBloom and Student Data Privacy (What's that you ask??)
  • Community Programs
Some of elected officials I noticed attending:
Senator Toby Stavisky
Assemblyman David Weprin
Assemblywoman Nily Rozic
Councilman Mark Weprin
Councilman Rory Lancman
Other officials sent representatives. I met District Representative Kieran Mahoney,  from Senator Avella's office, and Mayor DiBlazio's Deputy Chief of Staff, Roberto Perez. There may of been others but I did not see the sign in sheet.
I'll provide details into the topics on future posts to this blog. I welcome your comments or questions.
