Parent Leaders Hold Legislative Breakfast With Invited Elected Officials

The District 26 Presidents Council for PTA Parent Leaders of Grade K-8 Schools held their annual Legislative Breakfast to communicate to the elected officials their positions on education issues.

On Friday, March 1st parent leaders presented this years agenda that addressed Mayoral Control and District 26, Community Programs, Budget Cuts and School Funding, and High Stakes Testing. With the 10 years of Mayor Bloomberg's control of the NYC Department of Education, many changes have taken place that impacted parents and students. With budget cuts and reductions, programs for after school, and the Beacon Programs have been cut. Throughout all, testing is still a double edges sword!

The legislative breakfast is an opportunity to come together with the Community Superintendent, Anita Saunders, District Family Advocate Lori Butera, CDEC 26 President Jeannette Segal, UFT Mary Vaccaro, CSA Jeffrey Slivko and elected officials. Some came, others sent representatives to hear of the issues impacting our schools. Our education system is sfaced with many challenges: new technology in the classroom; the poor international standing of the U.S. students; raising of the bar as schools imiplement the new, more rigorous Common Core Learning Standards; federal mandates; state policies; city regulations; a constantly changing DOE; DOE/UFT negotiations, testing, data, budget cuts, etc. The stakes just continue to grow as a quality education becomes increasingly important for our children's future in a global economy.
