NextGeneration Program for Air Traffic and Impact on Bayside-Queens Community

Noise and air pollution produced by new flight patterns from LGA, unleashed by FAA/Port Authority is affecting Bayside/ northeast Queens residents

Most Bayside residents have probably noticed a significant increase this year in noise and air pollution from commercial aircrafts flying low and frequently over our homes.

When our local politicians finally managed to obtain information from the FAA, we found out that is the result of a trial for the newair traffic pattern to be subsequently implemented, according to NextGeneration System.

NextGen will transform America’s air traffic control system from a ground-based system to a satellite-based system. GPS technology will be used to shorten routes, save time and fuel, reduce traffic delays, increase capacity and permit planes to fly closer together with more planes in the sky.

While there appears to be advantages for airline companiesand airports, it seems that nobody took into consideration the negative effect on people who happen to reside under the designated pathways and who will have to live with airplanes flying above every 20-30 seconds.

For example, on Nov. 11, the noise produced by jets taking off from LaGuardia Airport started at about 6:30 a.m. and continued non-stop all day at less than one minute intervals.

I want to make people aware that having these aircrafts flying above our homes every 20-30 seconds is affecting our quality of life, our health and is bringing down our property values.

Please contact your local politicians before this flight pattern is permanently implemented (U.S. Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand) and ask for their support. You can get more information by emailing QueensQuietSkies@aol.com. or calling Community Board 11 at 718-225-1054.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
