Sushi, Sushi, Sushi

Platters for any and all occasions at Little Neck's Sushi Family

The last time I was at 252-01 Northern Boulevard it was the mid- to late-1980s and I was probably buying the newest X-MEN from the comic bookstore that was here. Flash forward 25 years and I'm sitting in a Japanese restaurant with my family, looking at my 2-year-old son watching cartoons on my cell phone while I'm about to eat some sushi out of a boat.

Who could've seen that one coming?

has been open for about 15 years and I am really upset that, not until last weekend, had I visited them for a meal. As the name suggests, I came with my family including my parents and brother. There is no better way to enjoy sushi than with a group of people. After walking up a flight of stairs to get to the restaurant you enter right into the main dining room. The left side of the room has tables for 6 the middle has tables for four and the right side has tables for 4 and 2. The back of the place is a sushi bar where you can sit and watch as they prepare food.

We were seated at a table for 6 and handed some menus. Before we looked at them we asked about the many specials they have posted up in their windows but found out they were take out only specials. Their menu has a large selection of sushi rolls, 49 to be exact, along with Teriyaki dishes, Katsu dishes, noodles, bento boxes and few Korean BBQ dishes. They also have a lunch special menu Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

After looking over the menu for a few minutes we ordered 10 rolls, seaweed salad, one miso soup for my wife and a bowl of white rice for my son. As they were taking our menus they dropped four bowls of complimentary appetizers on our table. The contents were different in each bowl, edamame, seaweed salad, vegetable tempura and some bean sprouts. If we knew we were going to get this we wouldn't have ordered the seaweed salad appetizer.

While waiting for our rolls to be prepared we noticed how much take out business they get. Every few minutes a bunch of plastic tray containers were piled on the sushi counter and either picked up by a customer or taken by the delivery guy. My father snuck a few peeks at the contents of these trays and was quite impressed and suggested to my mother that they should try taking out from here in the future.

We could tell that our rolls were almost ready when they placed a huge boat on the sushi counter and started loading it up. I was salivating when they brought the boat over. It was beautifully arrayed with an assortment of colors. They may have gone a little overboard with the crunchies but they didn't alter the flavors much, just texture. All the fish was very fresh and each roll had it's own unique flavor. If you couldn't tell we were all enjoying or meal all you had to do was listen to the mmmm's coming from our table.

One thing that I noticed that other places don't have is that along with the wasabi and ginger was some sweet pickled scallion. I had never had these before and couldn't stop popping them in my mouth.

We finished all of the rolls and topped everything off with some red bean and green tea ice cream.

I have to say that everyone was very friendly and we all felt very comfortable stuffing our faces in their presence. I am very happy that I have visited Family Sushi, their prices are a little lower than other sushi places around and their quality and service is top notch.
