The Y holds first annual breakfast award ceremony, celebrates some local businesses

The Samuel Field Y and Central Queens Y hosted an awards breakfast at the Flushing Town Hall Tuesday morning.

The event was a chance for the Y to recognize those within the Queens business community who have made a difference in the past few years.

“The support of the Queens business community is vital to organizations like the Samuel Field Y,” said Steve Goodman, executive vice president & CEO of the Samuel Field Y.

The Samuel Field Y offers a host of services to people of all ages within the Northeast Queens and Western Nassau communities.

It's reported that over 27,000 people a year take advantage of the programs offered at the Y — programs largely funded by charitable contributions from the Queens business community, according to Steve Goodman.

Jack Friedman, executive director of the Queens Chamber of Commerce was among those honored, receiving the 2011 Community Leadership Award for his years of dedication to the borough of Queens and the Samuel Field Y.

"I love working within the community ... It's something I enjoy, " Friedman said, stressing the value of corporate responsibility.

"We emphasize to all our members the importance of being good corporate citizens and community members," he said.

Joshua Schneps, a former member of the Samuel Field Y and co-publisher of the Queens Courier, was also honored at Tuesday's breakfast, taking home the 2011 Media Excellence Award.

"It's great to be able to make an impact on the community," Schneps said.

The Samuel Field Y payed tribute to the dedication of these men, which it said are dedicated to the betterment of the Queens community.

Goodman encouraged more local businesses to get involved.

"We want to help everyone in the business community understand they can do something that brings profit and growth to their business while serving the good of the community,” he said.

In addition to being honored by the Samuel Field-Central Queens Y, both Friedman and Schneps were awarded the City Council Citation for Outstanding Citizenship.
