May 9: Retail, Construction Jobs On The Rise

City follows national employment growth trend

Good morning, Little Neck! Following last week's better-than-expected April jobs report showing an increase of 244,000 in the nation's workforce, it's important to remember that there have also been employment gains citywide. 

According to this state jobs report, New York City added 5,500 positions in March — the latest month that local employment figures were available. Those positions were mostly in fields such as construction and retail, which continued to rebound after more than two years of recession.

1. Expect delays this a.m. on the Port Washington line of the Long Island Railroad due to an Amtrak derailment in the East River Tunnel. Customers should allow extra travel time and expect scattered 10 to 20 minute delays, according to the MTA.

2. In the wake of recent intelligence gathered after the death of Osama bin Laden, Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., proposed a "Do Not Ride" list for the U.S. rail system on Sunday, similar to that in place for air travel.

3. Celebrate Israel's Independence with Cantor Sol Zim and a special performance by the HHJM glee club at Hollis Hills Jewish Center tonight at 7:30 p.m.

4. The Starbucks at Little Neck Plaza will again host a tonight starting at 7 p.m.

5. Alternate side parking rules are in effect.
