Last Minute Gift Guide for Christmas

Check out Patch's guide to five local stores where you can buy a last minute gift for your loved ones.

You've waited until the last minute to buy your Christmas presents, didn’t you?

There’s no need to panic because Patch is providing a last minute gift guide that includes five items you can pick up on your way home from work today.

Here's a list of five gifts available from neighborhood stores:

1. Local Art

The National Art League’s Holiday Members’ Show and art sale runs through Jan. 5. The exhibit includes 107 pieces, which include everything from watercolor and acrylic to sculptures and mixed media. All of the pieces in the show are for sale and range from $70 to $200. Call 718-224-3957 for more information.

2. Sportswear

Modell’s Sporting Goods’ holiday gift guide suggestions include Nike NFL jerseys, Franklin Acrylic Basketball Mini Hoop set, shake weights, yoga mats, Timberland Stamford boots and ice skates. Each week this month, the store is offering different sales. Call 718-428-9200 for more information or drop by the store at the Douglaston Shopping Plaza.

3. Corningware Corelle & More

This Bay Terrace store has specials running through Christmas Eve. Customers can save 30 percent when they buy 12 and more on dinnerware. Visitors who buy two or more knives, sharpeners or cutting boards save 20 percent. Those who drop by can also enter to win a $1,000 gift card.

4. Flowers

Little Neck’s Cress Florist is offering a number of arrangements this holiday season, including Tweet This for Christmas, which includes a birdhouse, or Sammy the Snowman, which is presented in a vase in the shape of the titular character. Seasonal floral arrangements range from $29.95 to $59.95. Centerpieces are also available.

5. The Season’s Hottest Toys

Toys R Us, located in the Douglaston Shopping Plaza, has released its list of the hottest 15 toys of the season. It includes Doc McStuffins “Time for Your Checkup” doll, LeapPad2 Explorer, Furby, One Direction collector dolls and LEGO’s Ninjago Epic Dragon Battle. Call 718-224-2800 for information on sales.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
