H Mart Debuts in Bayside

Korean supermarket opens at former Waldbaum's site along Francis Lewis Boulevard.

H Mart opened this past weekend at the site of a former Waldbaum's chain store in Bayside.

The Korean supermarket replaces Waldbaum's at 46-40 Francis Lewis Blvd. after having delayed its Bayside debut several times.

State Sen. Tony Avella, D-Bayside, said that the supermarket's opening would be a relief for local seniors who had to trek to other communities for more than a year to buy groceries after Waldbaum's was shuttered.

"There was a high concentration of seniors who were having to travel long distances for a supermarket," Avella said. "We don't have enough supermarkets, so when one closes, it's especially hard for seniors. But this is a beautiful supermarket and I'm encouraging people to visit it."

Have you dropped by the new H Mart yet? If so, were you impressed? Add your comments to the section provided below.
