Douglaston's Ceriello Fine Foods Closes

Residents say the deli could not compete with Fairway Market.

Douglaston residents said they were disappointed that long-time neighborhood deli Ceriello Fine Foods closed this week.

Residents said they noticed that the store, which is located at 44-35 Douglaston Parkway, was closed on Monday.

“I walked past there on Monday afternoon and thought it was strange there was no bread in the window,” said Eliott Socci, president of the Douglaston Civic Association. “I looked in the window and the shelves and freezers were empty. People that know the place will say, ‘What a shame,’ but some of those same people weren’t going into that store to buy anything.”

Socci said the deli had recently not been getting the same business it once drew.

“Fairway just put them out of business,” he said. “I had many conversations with the owner and he predicted that. He could not compete with their prices and the parking.”

Ceriello offered Italian cold cuts, imported cheese and pastas.

“We lost a wonderful local business,” said Douglaston resident Joyce Ramirez of the store’s closing. “They will be missed by many.”

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
