Claus Stops By Strawberry's

A number of local families got their chance to break bread over breakfast with Santa Claus, who stopped by Douglaston on Sunday.

and the Douglaston Village Chamber of Commerce hosted the Second Annual Holiday Brunch with Jolly Ol' St. Nick as its special guest, a new local tradition that is quickly becoming a holiday favorite among Strawberry's staff.

"I really love this time of year, and especially doing things like this for the local children," said Joanie Ripollone, who works at the restaurant.

Ripollone, who doubled as one of Santa's special holiday elves, said she'd been looking forward to it for weeks.

"We had a lot of fun last year doing it, so I knew this year would be just as good of a time," she said.

Many of the families who had their shot to sit with Santa on Sunday said they were in whole-hearted agreement with Ripollone.

"It's been a great time, a real wonderful family event," said Douglaston's John Reed.

In addition to face time with Santa, Sunday's brunch also featured a Toys for Tots drop box.

Many of the patrons who turned out for this year's holiday brunch with the big guy brought along gifts that will be donated later this week to families in need.

"I definitely think it's important to give this time of year," Santa said.

The jolly old elf also strongly encouraged everyone to participate in this year's holiday toy drive.

Those interested in donating presents to Toys for Tots this year can bring their unwrapped gifts to Strawberry's Sports Grill in Douglaston from now until the holiday.
