Bourbon Street: Giving It Up for Lent

Cutting loose before Ash Wednesday

Bourbon Street threw the most hip-swingin' party on this side of the Mason-Dixon line for Fat Tuesday.

It was a last hurrah for some, as many of the party-goers planned to hunker down beginning today, Ash Wednesday, through the forty day Lent period.

Among the evening's revelers was Mike Lofton, who said he would be giving up smoking.

"I already gave up smoking," said Lofton's companion, Tara Vaccaro, who also said she'd be giving up chocolate. "Smoking's much harder," she added.

Community activist, Steve Behar, said he would be observing Lent, but at only 90 minutes to the midnight start of Ash Wednesday, still did not know what he would be giving up.

He seemed well equipped for sacrifice: Without any fuss of temptation, Behar turned down a sampling of chocolate peanut butter pie from the special Mardi Gras dessert menu.

One of Bourbon Street's most extroverted guests of the evening, who only identified herself as "Vikki," did an exuberant dance to the music of Mike Lewis & the Legacy Jazz Band. She later said she would be, "giving it all up for Lent."
