Zion Episcopal Church to Host Performances of 'The Dixie Swim Club'

Church will host comedic play for three weekends.

The Douglaston Community Theatre will perform “The Dixie Swim Club” for the next three weekends at Zion Episcopal Church.

The play, which was written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jaime Wooten, is a comedy about five Southern women who became friends in their youth on a college swim team and now set aside a weekend every August to reunite in North Carolina.

The play spans a period of 33 years, beginning with a weekend 22 years after their graduation.

This weekend’s performances are Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

Upcoming shows include Nov. 2, 3, 9 and 10 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 3 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $13 for seniors and students with ID. Group discounts are available for 10 or more people. To reserve a seat, call 718-482-3332.

Zion Episcopal Church is located at 243-01 Northern Blvd. in Douglaston. The play, which is directed by Vincent Scott, will be performed in the church’s parish hall on 44th Avenue at Douglaston Parkway.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
