The Wizard of Oz Goes Outdoors at Alley Pond Park

Plaza Theatrical Productions will put on their annual outdoor show this Friday.

You and your little ones may have seen the Wizard of Oz, but we bet you've never seen it while lying on a blanket under the stars.

Plaza Theatricals will give you the chance to do just that on Friday night in Alley Pond Park, when the Long Island-based touring company performs its rendition of '30s classic "the Wizard of Oz."

TC Weiss, who plays the Cowardly Lion in the show, said performing outdoors is a wonderful experience, but does come with its share of challenges.

"We have to deal with the weather," he said. "Performing in 100 degrees in a lion suit can get rather hot.

Challenges aside, the outdoor performances have proven wildly popular, drawing crowds well into the multiple hundreds, many of whom come well-prepared.

"During [the company's performance of] Charlotte's Web, I would go out in to the audience, and there would be people with chicken and pizza," Weiss said.

"It's a nice party atmosphere," he added.

Because the show is set in the expanse of Alley Pond Park, space is all but limitless, though those who seek prime real estate close to the stage should plan to come early.

The performance is free and will begin at 7 p.m. at Alley Pond Park, located at 76th Avenue and Springfield Boulevard.

Guests should bring at least a blanket or low chair to sit on, and are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy as well.
