Queensborough to Host Sing-A-Long Screening of 'The Wizard of Oz'

Attendee who shows the most enthusiasm will win a $100 cash prize.

Queensborough Community College will host a sing-a-long event to 1939’s “The Wizard of Oz” this weekend.

The film will screen at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Queensborough Performing Arts Center, located at 222-05 56th Ave. in Bayside.

The event, which is sponsored by Councilman Daniel Dromm, D-Jackson Heights, encourages audience participation via subtitles to sing along with the classic film starring Judy Garland.

“We know that audiences everywhere are singing and dancing along to their favorite movie musicals,” said Susan Agin, executive and artistic director at Queensborough’s performing arts center. “So, we’ve decided to put together a special film series to give moviegoers another way to enjoy their favorite movies. Here, the crowd sings along without an ounce of apprehension.”

In the spirit of Halloween, Agin said the performing arts center is also encouraging attendees to don costumes.

All seats are $5. Trivia contests and other activities will be held prior to the screening.

The most enthusiastic participant will win a $100 cash prize.

Tickets can be purchased by calling 718-631-6311 or at the performing arts center’s website.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
