National Art League to Offer Still Life Painting Course

Gallery's Class Would Instruct Students How to Craft Oil Painting from Start to Finish

The National Art League will host a four-week introductory course to still life painting next month for beginners and experienced artists.

Shawn Sullivan, who has a master’s degree in painting and teaches art at Beach Channel High School, said the class will teach students how to craft an oil painting step by step from start to finish.

“It’s meant to build up their confidence, so that they’ll learn the simple steps,” he said. “It’s a building process.”

The workshop, known as “Still Life Painting with Confidence,” will begin July 7 and run four consecutive Thursdays through July 28.

Students interested in taking further courses with Sullivan will be able to sign up for three to four more eight-week still life painting classes that will be held back-to-back at the art league through the end of the year.

Materials for the class will not be provided, but students will have access to easels and a place to wash their brushes.

Each course will include demonstrations and lectures and students will learn concepts such as the drawing-block-in, under-painting, mixing color strings and lighting a setup.

Sullivan will provide a supplies list for the class, so those interested in taking part should email him at Shawnsul8@aol.com or call 516-616-0009 to register.

Students will pay $100 for four courses. But those who sign up in advance for the month will only pay $88.

Sullivan will accept anyone from teenagers to senior citizens for the workshops. Each class will run from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Thursdays.
