Four years later, he moved to the United States and, in 1990, he received his master’s degree in fine arts from the City University of New York.

He founded the nonprofit Queens Art Education Center, which is the first Chinese professional art school in the five boroughs, in Flushing in 1998. He has since opened four branches of the art center in New York City.

Liu’s books include “Learning Chinese/English Through Drawing” and the upcoming “Learning Nursery Rhymes Through Drawing.”

This year, he was awarded the Ellis Land Medal of Honor, which pays homage to immigrants who have made an impact on the U.S.

Liu’s style captures the essence of Western art, but applies the techniques of traditional Chinese painting. He refers to his work as the “flowing colors oil painting technique,” which has been patented.

The National Art League is located at 44-21 Douglaston Parkway.
