National Art League to Debut Annual Open Exhibition in May

Douglaston gallery to host 83rd annual show with 98 new pieces of artwork.

The National Art League will debut nearly 100 new pieces from artists from Queens and across the United States during its 83rd annual juried open exhibition on May 6.

The show, which will run through June 1, includes 98 pieces from the Douglaston gallery’s members as well as work from artists in Connecticut, New Jersey, New Mexico and Massachusetts.

More than $2,000 in awards will be presented during a reception for the show on May 19 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The exhibit’s works, which are representational and abstract, were completed in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, assemblage, mixed, collage and sculpture.

Subject matter includes landscapes, portraits, seascapes, still life and city streets.   “It’s an open show, so we have members and nonmembers participating,” said Karmen Elsen, coordinator for the exhibit. “We’ve gotten submissions from all over the U.S.”

The show’s judges are Beth Levinthal, executive director for Hofstra University’s museum, and David Filderman, who was the past executive director for the Heckscher Museum of Art.

The National Art League is located at 44-21 Douglaston Parkway.
