National Art League to Debut 9/11 Exhibit

Douglaston gallery will host reception this weekend for 30 artworks inspired by the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The National Art League will debut two new exhibits this weekend, one of which includes 30 new pieces inspired by the tenth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The gallery, located at 44-21 Douglaston Parkway, will host a free reception for its “9/11: Ten Years After Exhibition” on Saturday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The exhibit will remain on display through the end of the month.

Joanie Goldberg, the show’s curator, said the exhibit will feature an estimated 30 pieces of artwork of varying styles, including watercolor, oil, sculpture, mixed media and collage.

“It’s to honor and respect the victims who passed away as well as to pay tribute to the first responders,” Goldberg said. “The show explores the plethora of emotions people felt after 9/11 – tragedy, pride, resilience and sadness.”

Some of the show’s pieces were created immediately after the attacks at the World Trade Center, while others were put together for the exhibit.

“We thought this was something we had to do together as an art league,” Goldberg said of the show. “And we’ve gotten a great response. It’s a very reflective walk through that time. The work has been right-on in terms of expressiveness and depth.”

Several of the paintings depict the abundance of American flags that popped up across the community following 9/11.

The show’s pieces are displayed in the league’s front window and in its second floor gallery. Some of the works are for sale, while the league will sell prints of others.

The gallery is also in the process of hanging works for its Instructors Show, which will be on display through Oct. 1. The reception for that show, which will include pieces from the league’s teachers, will be held at the same time this weekend as the 9/11 exhibit’s debut.
