National Art League Hosts Weekly Drawing Class

Teacher Marc Josloff said he would introduce students to a variety of drawing techniques and subject matter.

teacher Marc Josloff is hoping that a new class he is offering at the Douglaston gallery will be a big draw.

Josloff, who received the 2008 Arts in Education award, will teach “Complete Drawing” every Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. through the end of June.

Students will learn all styles of drawing, including graphite, pastel, Conte, pen and ink, eraser drawing, watercolor, ink wash, collage accenting, contour, tonal, hatching and cross-hatching.

“I have students who have won medals and beginners who don’t know where to start,” Josloff said. “I welcome all levels and I’m embracing everyone.”

The course’s subject matter includes still life, floral, landscape, figures, portraiture and abstraction.

“I think it’s important to provide a smorgasbord of techniques and different subject matter,” Josloff said. “I find each student’s comfort zone and nurture that. Then, during the course’s second half, I like to individualize so that students are working more independently and I’m monitoring their progress.”

Students can pick up the course at any time and each class costs $25.

Josloff said most students who take the course attend every week.

“It’s good to have continuity because sometimes you pick up from the lesson before,” he said. “But people can pick it up at any time. And the beginners can learn from the advanced students.”

Josloff said the art league would likely display work created in the class at the culmination of the program.

One student, Suzanne McVetty, recently won an award of merit at the National Art League’s 81st Annual Fall Members’ Exhibit for her sketch of a sandal.

“Marc introduces students to all drawing mediums working from the masters to one’s own still life or figure,” McVetty said. “Creative and inspirational, [he] takes you on a journey of tonal and linear vision.”

Those interested in attending the class can either sign up in advance or just show up for one of the sessions.

Josloff said he would send each student a list of materials they need for the course. For more information, email mjosloff@verizon.net or call 516-223-7659.

The art league is located 44-21 Douglaston Parkway.
