National Art League Hosts Gallery Show for Students

Budding Artists Will Get Opportunity to Show Off Their Work For a Month

The National Art League will display work this month from the 75 students who are enrolled in the Douglaston gallery's classes.

The league, located at 44-21 Douglaston Parkway, has hosted a student artwork show for the past 20 years.

Marie Marsina, president of the gallery, said this year's selection will include a variety of styles, including pastel, watercolor, drawing, oil, mixed media, acrylic and collage.

"It's an opportunity for many of them to exhibit a piece of work, especially since many of them are not members," she said. "This is the only show we have for students."

Paintings in the show will include everything from florals and portraits to landscapes and abstract works.

Marsina said the league hosts the show with the intention of gaining new members.

"We hope they will take enough classes and are encouraged to join," she said. "They have to get to a certain level of artistic talent to become a member. But, over time, they get there."

Student artists are currently in the process of delivery their pieces to the league. The show will begin Jan. 10 and the league will host a reception for the students from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 23.

Awards will be handed out to the two top pieces during the reception. The show will run in the league's main gallery space through the end of January.

The league's students, who hail from Douglaston, Little Neck, Bayside, Flushing, Brooklyn and Long Island, range in age from 30 years to 80 years. The gallery offers classes Monday through Friday. Click here for a complete schedule.

Each month, the league debuts new art shows with varying themes, displaying works from its 300 members. Local artists give free painting, sculpting or drawing demonstrations at the gallery every Friday at 8 p.m.

The National Art League was founded in 1930.

Check back with Douglaston Patch later this month for coverage of the league's reception for its students, including interviews with the artists.
