National Art League Hosts 82nd Annual Members Show

Douglaston gallery exhibits work from 96 local artists.

The National Art League is currently running its first large show of the season that includes 96 pieces by its members that span a variety of mediums.

The 82nd Fall Members Show debuted in late October and will run through Dec. 1. A reception for the artists will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 18 at the gallery, which is located at 44-21 Douglaston Parkway.

Gold, silver and bronze medals as well as merit prizes will be awarded to the winners in each category, which include everything from oil and acrylic to watercolor and mixed media.

“Some of the pieces are really stunning,” said Karmen Elsen, who organized the show. “Often, our members go all out and do something special for this show. Everybody gets excited about this one because it’s the first member show of the season.”

A total 34 watercolor pieces were submitted for the show, while 45 oil and acrylic are being displayed. In addition, 17 sculptures, pastels, ceramics and mixed media works have been submitted to the show.

Subject matter ranges from landscapes, florals and portraits to seascapes, cityscapes and animals.

Artist Susie Ga’ch Peele will act as judge for the show. Pieces will be rated for creativity and concept, design and composition, technique and visual impact.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
